The course is based on a variety of structured discussions and demonstrations, drawing on the experience of the course members at every opportunity. A variety of current digital audio equipment is used for demonstration and illustration. The course covers:
- Fundamentals of digital audio - sampling, quantisation, coding, error protection, practical conversion techniques
- Recording and replay systems - CD, CDR, MiniDisc, hard disk recording (inc Compact Flash), DVD, DAT, digital video tape formats
- The digital studio - interconnection and synchronisation, AES/EBU and SPDIF interfaces
- Audio data reduction systems and their application - MPEG systems, G. 722, Apt-X, ATRAC and RealAudio
