The aims of this course are to provide basic directing skills for those already self-shooting on DV, to increase operating confidence through workshops and practical exercises & to demonstrate what can realistically be achieved and encourage 'best practice'.
A combination of practical workshops and master classes equips the DV self-operator with the essential directing skills for shooting a range of common situations. Course members will practise these skills as they recce, script, shoot and edit a location story with an editor. The course is designed for shooting in available light.

By the end of the course Delegates will acquire the basic directing skills and confidence to shoot the most common situations.
who it's for:
Researchers and Assistant Producer's with experience of shooting DV, who want to progress towards directing & shooting their own programme inserts or short items on DV.
Delegates must have completed a basic DV operational training course (e.g. BBC Training Sony PD 150, VX 2000, Z1 or DSR 570 Workshop).
Delegates would also benefit from having completed any of the following BBC courses: Sony Z1 Operation & Shooting, Shooting Sequences, Sound Skills for Self Shooters, Lighting & Safety Workshop
You must be a competent DV operator to benefit from this course.
- Directing guidelines for common situations
- Revision of basic camera functions of the Sony Z1, generally used on this course
- A location story is recced on day two, scripted, shot on day four, then edited with an editor, either on Avid Xpress or Avid DV Xpress
- Midweek seminars and workshops deal with story structure, shooting with available light, and shooting sound for DV.
