For anyone wanting to start operating Portable Single Cameras (PSC) on location this module is a thorough introduction to the preparation and shooting of material on single camera.

The aims of this course are to provide a comprehensive grounding in the preparation and operational requirements and techniques of single camera shooting, to understand the camera requirements for correct framing, focus, white balance, and exposure, together with a good understanding of optics. To give delegates experience in shooting material for news, documentaries or features. How to shoot for the edit suite; as a cameraman your aim is not only to produce quality pictures and sound, but shoot a story in such in a way that gives the editor an opportunity to cut you work in a variety of ways.

Newcomers to PSC camerawork who need to develop effective practical skills and an understanding of location techniques. This course is also designed for anyone who is required or intends to use a PSC type camera.

  • Each day will be divided into knowledge, practical exercises, and a review to fully
  • Understand how to operate a PSC type camera 
  • Basic principles and procedures for working on location 
  • Using the latest digital widescreen cameras and current sound equipment 
  • Lenses; standard and wide angle, their differences and how to get the best from them 
  • Simple interview lighting 
  • Correct use of microphones and capturing sound 
  • Basic camera techniques including hand-held 
  • Shooting for the edit suite will be explained and explored 
  • Planning, shooting and being involved with the edit of your own short piece, reviewing the finished result

By the end of the course delegates will have:

  • the skills to shoot video on location, together with an understanding of some basic lighting and sound techniques 
  • an understanding of editing requirements, the confidence to put their skills into practice and be able to contribute to the programme making process
