The content of each session is prepared by the course instructors to meet the needs of the participants and can be devised in consultation with partners or workshop sponsors, where appropriate. As with all Reuters Journalism courses, training combines practical exercises with discussion, theory lectures and contributions from guest experts.
General News Reporting Specialist Journalism Workshop:
- Accuracy (one day): how to double check information, verify sources and provide balance.
- General news reporting skills (two days): core techniques for delivering fast, accurate, impartial and reliable coverage. Raising awareness of legal dangers.
- Editorial balance (one day): ensuring impartiality and reporting all sides of a story.
- Researching for interviews (one day): different ways to gather information, including using new technologies. How to verify information and identify sources.
- Codes of conduct (one day): a review of codes for journalists in different countries and exploration of why codes matter.
- Feature writing (two days): how to create interest and techniques for researching and writing compelling features.
- Investigative reporting (two days): how to gather and verify information, build a story, report accurately and fairly and follow-up outcomes. Avoiding legal dangers and staying safe.
- Copy editing / sub-editing (two days): how to edit copy effectively, without distorting or misrepresenting it; dangers to watch out for; spotting the gaps.
- Legal dangers / intellectual property rights (one day): learning how to navigate the legal minefields and the essential points of copyright.
